The New York Times is going to charge users for access to the articles published on the website and for smartphone applications.
They want to enhance their ability to offer high quality journalism for their readers from all over the world on every platform. Readers will be able to read 20 articles for free each month, and after that they will have to pay 15 dollar per month for gaining access to the rest of the content and smartphones applications.
The monthly amount for accessing the website from devices such as iPad is going to be between 15 and 20 dollars. For 35 dollars a month readers are going to get access to the New York Times content from all platforms. YouTube heeft aangekondigd dat vanaf nu HTML5 gaan ondersteunen voor het afspelen van video’s. Webbrowsers die HTML5 ondersteunen kunnen video’s in H.264-formaat afspelen, zonder dat daarvoor Flash nodig is. Dat is goed nieuws voor iPhone-gebruikers, want de Safari-browser van de iPhone ondersteunt HTML5. Vlak daarna kondigde Vimeo aan dat ze ook voor HTML5 zullen kiezen. Het grote voordeel, ook voor andere platformen, is dat HTML5 minder processorkacht nodig heeft en een minder grote aanslag op de batterijduur levert dan Flash. De desktopbrowsers Safari, Internet Explorer en Chrome zijn geschikt – Firefox echter niet.
